How to style tops with skirts, for men
A regular t-shirt will rest at an awkward height for most skirts. That's because most skirts are worn at or above the naval, whereas men's pants sit at the waist. While you'll find comfort and style in baggy tops, what we most often recommend is the fitted top.
Skirts, especially those with volume or an A-line shape, can add bulk to the lower body. A fitted top provides balance by creating a streamlined silhouette that follows the line of the skirt. This prevents the outfit from appearing too bulky or shapeless.
Likewise, a fitted top will provide cleaner lines when tucking the shirt in, without excess fabric.
Fitted tops emphasize the waist, which is particularly flattering when paired with high-waisted skirts. And you'll get to show off more of the skirt, and more of your legs.
They also accentuate the chest, creating a more tailored and intentional look. Throw broad shoulders in the mix and you've got an hourglass shape that many consider aesthetically pleasing.
Overall, fitted tops are far more versatile than regular t-shirts, working with the full range of skirt types.
Where to find fitted tops
Fitted tops for men can mean going a size down from what you normally wear, having a custom tailored shirt made, finding trimmed tops in the women's section, or even wearing crop tops.
It's worth nothing that all of the tops in the before/after pics below are thrifted from the women's section. They pair better with skirts, because *surprise*, they've been designed with skirts in mind.
More and more men are shopping across the gender divide and finding great, refreshing tops. You'll need to test that the shoulder area, neckline, and arms are big enough – online shopping makes this difficult.
Of course you might find well fitted tops in the men's section as well. But they won't be as fun.
