Where's My Waistline? Tips for the Skirted Male

I sat down to write this style tip thinking that the recommendation would be 'Your waistline is at the navel, not the top of your butt'. For most skirts and traditional kilts, this might be true. But for many skirts, it depends.

Why Wear Skirts High?

  1. Your legs will look longer.
  2. The male bulge can be less noticeable under the drape of a skirt, if that's a concern.
  3. For narrow pencil skirts, legs have more room to walk (or dance).

What to Consider

A lot of it comes down to personal preference.

Skirt Length

On average, longer skirts should be worn higher on the waist, for balance.

Shirt Length

Unless you go intentionally baggy, having the bottom of a shirt meet somewhere near the waistband will look more intentional—see Fitted tops.

Masc vs. Fem

In western culture, skirts worn higher on the waist often look more feminine and natural. But there are many factors in a feminine or masculine approach to skirts.

Denim Vibes

Skirts with jean-inspired features like pockets, belt loops, sturdy fabric, and a fly will likely have a natural look and feel sitting lower on the waist.

Waist Fit

Skirts that work well near the navel have stretchy fabric and a snug fit at the waist. Stiff materials can work too, as long as the fit is just right or there's flexibility in the waist, like with wrap skirts. If you come across skirts with a high hip-to-waist ratio designed for female bodies, you might have to go a size up and wear it lower on the waist, to avoid pinching your stomach.

The three skirts below wouldn't actually sit at my navel because they're more loose at the waist, but I like the relaxed look and feel:

Three images of a male in skirts. Left is a peach and pink collared shirt with a brown linen a-line skirt, and brown leggings. Middle is a white fitted tee and a blue straight skirt with pockets and fly. Right is a light grey fitted tee with plant pattern and an orange and navy patterned a-line skirt. All skirts waistlines are where jeans would be.

Play around with different skirts and find your style—just make sure to try the higher waistline and see if it works.

Here are some comparison pics to help you visualize high and low waistlines with various skirt types (maxi, mini, pencil, skater, a-line, and straight cut):

Two images, left is 'LOW WAIST', right is 'HIGH WAIST'. Both have a male wearing dark baggy crop top and a black and white long skirt.
Two images, left is 'LOW WAIST', right is 'HIGH WAIST'. Both have a male wearing a white fitted tee, blue jean leggings, and a white and black mini skirt.
Two images, left is 'LOW WAIST', right is 'HIGH WAIST'. Both have a male wearing a pink crop top, with a furry front black pencil skirt, and black tights.
Two images, left is 'LOW WAIST', right is 'HIGH WAIST'. Both have a male wearing a hot pink skater skirt, a black sleeveless top buttoned shirt, and black tights.
Two images, left is 'LOW WAIST', right is 'HIGH WAIST'. Both have a male wearing a baggy dull pink crop top, and a black with white circle outline a-line skirt.
Two images, left is 'LOW WAIST', right is 'HIGH WAIST'. Both have a male wearing a dark green straight cut semi-pencil skirt, a fitted striped tee, and light grey leggings.

This is a helpful post, I hadn’t considered high vs low waist. Being tall with long legs, I still prefer the low waist for hem height location. My personal preference is knee-ish length or longer. Additionally it seems that a smaller fitted skirt rides on my low waist better. I can appreciate the point 2. on the reasoning to wear a skirt high.

For a while, I wasn’t aware of high and low-waisted skirts. But boy, does it make a difference! The only thing I’m concerned with now… Well there’s two things: one is my maxi skirts touching the ground but two, is if my skirt will shift down my waist. I have a gut and sometimes I inhale a bit much for whatever reason. I just fear my skirt falling low enough so that I accidentally step on it while walking. It helps that the skirt I’m questioning is elastic so I guess it sorta conforms to me in various ways.

Nice presentation of a worthwhile and non-obvious topic. I would have liked to see some tucked-in tops, though. That really makes a difference in how low or high waist looks. I usually go tucked and almost always high-waisted.
